The Union government has issued an advisory in this regard and said that online games will be investigated by the Self Regulatory Organization (SRO). This online game will be allowed to run on the public platform if the rules are followed. Along with this, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said that media platforms should also avoid running betting advertisements. Legal action will be taken if the advisory is not respected.

Betting games will not be approved

Minister of State for IT Chandrasekhar said that online games will be investigated by the Self Regulatory Organization (SRO). This approval will be given to such online games which do not involve any form of betting or wagering. Regarding the betting advertisements running on the media, the government said that betting and gambling are illegal as per the law. The government has said that if any media platform directly or indirectly advertises betting, it will be considered a violation of the law.

Advertising of betting platforms is illegal

According to the Information Technology (Digital Media Code of Ethics) Rules 2021, the ministry has said that advertisement of betting platforms is an illegal activity, which cannot be shown on digital media. The advisory said that the ministry has observed that promotional content and advertisements of betting platforms are still appearing on some news platforms and OTT platforms. Online offshore betting platforms have started using news websites as a surrogate product to advertise.
